The prettiest short stop in Switzerland, and a serious concert city

Lucerne has a covered wooden bridge from 1333, a lake that runs between cliffs into the heart of the country, and two mountains reachable by cogwheel railway. It also has one of Europe's best concert halls.

The Ultimate City Desk

Lucerne sits where the Reuss leaves Lake Lucerne, and it has been the tourist gateway to central Switzerland since the British invented Alpine tourism in the nineteenth century. The Kapellbrücke, built in 1333 and the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, crosses the river with a sequence of seventeenth-century painted panels in its gables — most of which burned in 1993 and have been replaced where possible. The Museggmauer, the medieval wall with nine towers, still stands above the old town and several towers are open to climb.

The Lion Monument, a dying lion carved into a rock face to commemorate Swiss Guards killed in the French Revolution, is the city's most affecting thing; Mark Twain called it the saddest and most moving piece of stone in the world, and he was not wrong. The Swiss Museum of Transport out along the lake is much the best museum of its kind in the country and absorbs a half-day with children easily.

The modern layer is the KKL, Jean Nouvel's concert hall on the lakefront, whose main auditorium is among the finest-sounding rooms in Europe. The Lucerne Festival in August and September brings the major orchestras, and the acoustic is the reason they come. Beyond the city, the lake boats and the railways up Pilatus and Rigi are the proper day trips.

Practical notes for residents

The mountains

Pilatus is reached by the world's steepest cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad and a cable car from Kriens — the classic circuit combines a lake boat, the cogwheel up and the cable car down.
Rigi, across the lake, has two cogwheel railways and is the gentler, sunnier option with a larger summit plateau.
Engelberg and the Titlis glacier are about 45 minutes by train and are the nearest proper ski area, with glacier skiing extending the season.

Skiing from here

The Alpine ski season runs roughly from December to April, with glacier and high-alpine terrain holding later. Exact opening and closing dates move with the snowpack every year — check the lift company before booking travel around them.
Engelberg-Titlis is the local resort — big, steep in places, and with a famous off-piste descent from the Laub. Andermatt is about an hour and has had substantial recent investment.
Lucerne sits low and rarely holds snow; the resorts above it do.

Getting about

The old town is walkable and the station, boats and concert hall are all within a few minutes of each other.
Lake Lucerne's boats are public transport, covered by Swiss rail passes, and the paddle steamers are worth choosing deliberately.
Zurich is 45 minutes by train, Zurich Airport an hour and ten; Interlaken about two hours on the Luzern–Interlaken Express.

Practicalities

Lucerne is a day-trip destination for coach tours and cruise groups; the old town between ten and four in summer is very busy, and early evening is much better.
The Lucerne Festival fills the city in late summer — book accommodation well ahead if you are coming for it.
