Vernon is the north Okanagan's working town — orchards, ranching, three lakes — and SilverStar Mountain Resort is 25 minutes above it, with a painted Victorian village you ski right into.
Vernon was the first incorporated city in the BC interior, in 1892, and grew on cattle and then on fruit: the O'Keefe Ranch north of town is the surviving evidence of the first, and the orchards on the benches above the lakes of the second. It sits between Okanagan, Kalamalka and Swan lakes, and Kalamalka — the one that turns an improbable striped turquoise in summer — is the reason a lot of people first stop here.
SilverStar Mountain Resort, 25 minutes up the hill, is the winter half of the town's economy. The village at its base is built in brightly painted Victorian pastiche, which sounds dreadful and works, largely because it is genuinely ski-in and ski-out: you come off the mountain into the street. The terrain is bigger than its reputation, with a front side of long groomers and a back side of steeper, more interesting skiing, and the cross-country network at Sovereign Lake next door is among the best in Canada — the national team trains on it.
The pairing is unusually good for families: a mountain with gentle terrain and a car-free village, and a real town 25 minutes below with supermarkets and normal prices. In summer the equation reverses, and the lakes rather than the mountain are what people come for.

Living Here
The season
- Ski season runs roughly late November to early April, with the highest terrain holding into late April or May in a good year. Opening and closing dates move with the snowpack every season — check the resort before booking flights around them.
- SilverStar typically opens late November and closes in early April. The base village sits high, so snow holds there even when Vernon is green.
- Sovereign Lake and SilverStar together form one of the largest connected cross-country networks on the continent, and it opens earlier than the alpine in most years.
Getting there and around
- Kelowna International is about 45 minutes south and is the practical airport; Vernon has no scheduled service.
- SilverStar is 25 minutes from town on a steep but maintained road, with a ski shuttle in season.
- A car is close to essential unless you are staying in the SilverStar village for the week.
When the snow goes
- SilverStar runs lift-served downhill mountain biking, and the trail network below it is extensive.
- The Okanagan Rail Trail runs along Kalamalka Lake towards Kelowna — flat, gravel, and one of the best easy family rides in the province.
- Lake swimming from late June, and the north Okanagan wineries are quieter and cheaper than those further south.
Practicalities
- Vernon Jubilee Hospital covers the north Okanagan; complex cases go to Kelowna.
- The city is a retirement destination as well as a resort feeder, which shows in the healthcare provision and the pace of the place.
