The largest ski resort in North America, and it behaves like it

Whistler Blackcomb is two mountains, a gondola between them and more skiable terrain than anywhere else on the continent. It is also busy, expensive and coastal — which is to say sometimes raining at the base while it snows above.

Whistler was built to be this. The first lifts went up on what was then London Mountain in 1966 with an Olympic bid already in mind; Blackcomb followed in 1980 as a direct competitor, the two merged in 1997, and the municipality — incorporated in 1975 as Canada's first resort municipality — exists to run the resort and little else. The 2010 Winter Olympics brought the Sea-to-Sky Highway up to a standard that cut the drive from Vancouver to under two hours, which changed the place again.

The scale is the thing people underestimate. Two mountains with over 200 marked runs, a vertical of more than 1,500 metres on each, bowls and glaciers above the treeline, and the Peak 2 Peak Gondola spanning between them — you can ski for a week without repeating much. It also means the terrain suits everyone: the greens are long and genuine, and the alpine is as serious as anywhere in Canada.

The costs of being coastal and famous are real. Base-elevation rain is a regular feature in December and March, lift queues at peak holidays are among the worst anywhere, and the village is expensive in a way the interior resorts are not. What you get for it is a car-free pedestrian village that works, the most reliable spring skiing in Canada on the Horstman Glacier, and a summer bike park that is the sport's global reference point.

Where People Live

The neighbourhoods

Whistler Village

The pedestrian core: the gondolas, most hotels, the restaurants and the nightlife. Everything walkable, nothing cheap.

Upper Village & Blackcomb Benchlands

Across Fitzsimmons Creek at Blackcomb's base — quieter, a little more expensive, and ski-in from the Benchlands.

Creekside

The original 1966 base, three kilometres south: its own gondola, far shorter queues and a more residential feel.

Function Junction & Alta Vista

South of the village: the light-industrial and local end of town, with the better-value food and the breweries.

Living Here

Practical notes for residents

The season

  • The ski season here is the longest in Canada: roughly late November to late May on Whistler, with Blackcomb's Horstman Glacier historically running later still. Confirm current glacier operations with the resort, as summer skiing arrangements have changed.
  • Because the base sits low and the coast is wet, December and March can bring rain at village level while it snows above mid-station. Pack for both and buy a lift ticket that lets you move up.
  • Christmas, New Year and Presidents' Day weekends are the busiest periods on the continent. If you have any flexibility, late January and early February are the sweet spot for snow and space.

Getting there and around

  • Vancouver International is about two hours away on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, with frequent scheduled coaches straight to the village — this is one of the few major resorts where arriving without a car is genuinely easy.
  • The village is pedestrian and the free village shuttle links the bases; a car is a liability more than an asset in peak weeks.
  • The Sea-to-Sky closes occasionally for snow and rockfall. Leave slack before a flight.

When the snow goes

  • The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is the most developed lift-served downhill operation in the world, and the valley trail network beyond it is vast.
  • Whitewater rafting on the Elaho and Squamish rivers runs out of Squamish and Whistler through summer.
  • Hiking from the Roundhouse and on the High Note Trail puts you in alpine terrain straight off the gondola, and the Train Wreck and Cheakamus walks are easy and good.

Practicalities

  • The Whistler Health Care Centre handles the volume of a resort rather than a town of 15,000; anything major goes to Vancouver.
  • Housing for seasonal staff is the municipality's chronic problem, and it shows in service levels at peak times.
