Krakow
The capital Warsaw took the job from, and never the standing
Kraków is Poland's second city and its old royal capital, the one that came through the war with its buildings intact. It is the country's university town, its tourist magnet and, on a still winter morning, one of the smoggier cities in Europe.
There was a settlement on the Wawel hill by the tenth century, and Kraków was the seat of Polish kings from around 1038 until the court moved to Warsaw at the end of the sixteenth century. The Mongols burned it in 1241; the rebuilt town was chartered under Magdeburg law in 1257, which gave it the vast market square and grid that still stand, and is the founding this edition dates from. The Jagiellonians made it a Renaissance capital, with the university Copernicus attended and a Wawel rebuilt by Italian architects; Casimir the Great's Kazimierz, founded in 1335, became the Jewish town after 1495. The partitions gave Kraków to Austria, and under Habsburg Galicia it became the sentimental capital of a Poland that did not exist. The Germans made it the seat of the General Government in 1939, and the Podgórze ghetto fed Płaszów and Auschwitz; the buildings survived, the Jewish population did not. Nowa Huta, the steelworks city, was communism's answer to a clerical, bourgeois town.
The Old Town is a ring: the medieval city inside the Planty, the park laid out on the line of the walls, with the Rynek Główny — the largest medieval square in Europe — at its centre and the Cloth Hall, St Mary's basilica and its hourly trumpet call in the middle of that. The Wawel hill, with castle and cathedral, closes the southern end above the Vistula. Kazimierz, south-east of the Wawel, is the former Jewish town, now the bar and restaurant district; across the river, Podgórze holds the ghetto memorial, Schindler's factory and the newer galleries. West of the Planty, the streets around Karmelicka and the university are student and café territory, and Krowodrza and Bronowice are the comfortable districts beyond. Nowa Huta, the planned socialist city some 10 kilometres east, is a world of its own, and the concrete estates of the south and the surrounding villages house most of the population.
Kraków is Poland's university town — the Jagiellonian and AGH between them give it a student population that thins the city noticeably every July — and its arts capital, with the Wyspiański and Matejko rooms of the National Museum, the Czartoryski Leonardo, Tadeusz Kantor's theatre tradition and a jazz scene that dates from when it was one of the few places in the bloc that tolerated one. The food is pierogi, żurek and the obwarzanek bread rings sold from carts on every corner; the milk bars are the cheap lunch and the zapiekanka stalls on Plac Nowy the late one, and the restaurants have improved dramatically in a decade. Vodka is drunk cold and straight, and the craft-beer bars have multiplied. Wisła and Cracovia are the football clubs, and their rivalry, the 'Holy War', is the oldest in the country and not always a figure of speech. Weekends are for the Tatras, two hours south.
The hard parts begin with the air: Kraków sits in a bowl, and its winter smog, from coal stoves in the surrounding villages, was for years among the worst in Europe; a city ban on solid fuel since 2019 has helped, but the region around it has not caught up. The Old Town has been given over to tourists — stag parties, Auschwitz day-trippers, short-term lets — to the point that residents have largely left it, and rents across the city have climbed with the tech boom and the arrival of Ukrainians after 2022. Wages remain well below Western levels, and Polish bureaucracy is thorough and paper-bound. Summers can be sticky and winters bitter. What it offers is a beautiful, intact and compact city with a serious intellectual life, cheap and frequent trams, the mountains and the salt mine an hour away, and a cost of living that still makes a good life possible on a modest salary.
Where People Live
Old Town (Stare Miasto)
The Rynek, the Cloth Hall, St Mary's and the Floriańska gate and Barbican, with the university's Collegium Maius a street away. The tourist core; residents cross it rather than live in it.
Wawel
The castle and the cathedral with the royal tombs and the Sigismund bell on the hill at the end of Grodzka, and the Vistula boulevards below where the city walks on summer evenings.
Kazimierz
The old Jewish town — the Old and Remuh synagogues on Szeroka, the cemetery, the Jewish Culture Festival in summer — and now the bar district, with the zapiekanka stalls of Plac Nowy at its centre.
Podgórze & Zabłocie
Across the Vistula: the ghetto memorial on Plac Bohaterów Getta, Schindler's factory museum and MOCAK contemporary art in Zabłocie's converted works, and the Krakus Mound above. Quieter and more local than Kazimierz.
Krowodrza & the university quarter
The streets west of the Planty around Karmelicka and the AGH campus, with the Błonia meadow and Jordan Park for space. Students, cafés and the flats young Cracovians can still afford.
Nowa Huta
The planned socialist city of the 1950s, laid out in a fan from Plac Centralny, with the Arka Pana church the workers fought for and the steelworks at the end of the tram. A district that has become a destination.
Salwator & Zwierzyniec
The villa district along the Vistula west of the centre, the Norbertine convent and the walk up to the Kościuszko Mound. Where the Sunday stroll goes.

Getting about
- MPK Kraków runs the trams, which are the backbone, and the buses; tickets are timed (20, 60 or 90 minutes) or by period, bought from machines at stops and on board or through the Jakdojade and mKarta apps, and must be validated. The Old Town is largely closed to cars, so the trams stop on its edge.
- The centre is compact and walkable, and the Planty ring makes a 4-kilometre loop around it; cycle lanes run along the Vistula boulevards, and the cobbles and tram tracks need care.
- John Paul II airport at Balice is about 20 minutes from Kraków Główny by train. Warsaw is roughly two and a half hours by Pendolino; Wieliczka salt mine is half an hour, Zakopane two to three by bus, and Auschwitz about an hour and a half.
- A car is unnecessary and parking in the centre is by paid zone; Bolt, Uber and FreeNow are cheap and plentiful.
Health
- The University Hospital's new campus at Prokocim is the largest in the region; Rydygier and the John Paul II hospital are the other main ones. Residents are covered by the NFZ public insurance; the care is good, waits can be long, and Medicover and LuxMed private clinics serve the foreign community in English.
- Dial 112, or 999 for an ambulance. Pharmacies (apteka) are everywhere and each district has one open all night on rota.
- EU and UK visitors can use the EHIC or GHIC in the public system; everyone else should carry insurance. Bring a mask for the worst smog days in winter, and check the air-quality apps residents all use.
Work & study
- The Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364, is the second-oldest in Central Europe; AGH for mining and technology, the University of Economics, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Pedagogical University give the city one of the largest student populations in the country. Polish-taught degrees at public universities are tuition-free; English-taught programmes charge fees.
- Kraków is one of Europe's largest business-services and IT hubs — Google, IBM, Cisco, State Street and dozens of shared-service centres employ tens of thousands — alongside tourism, the universities, the much-reduced steelworks and a growing games industry.
- Non-EU workers need a permit arranged through the employer; Ukrainians have been on a special footing since 2022. English is enough in the service centres and tech; Polish is needed for most other jobs and all dealings with the state.
Money & manners
- The currency is the złoty, not the euro. Cards and the BLIK phone-payment system are accepted almost everywhere; avoid the Euronet ATMs. Tip about 10% in restaurants; VAT is included. Most shops close on Sundays by law, with a few trading Sundays a year.
- Say dzień dobry on entering a shop; this is a Catholic and conservative city, so cover shoulders in churches and keep the volume down. Flowers in odd numbers, shoes off in a home, and never confuse it with Warsaw in front of a local.
- Winters run from December to February and are often below freezing and sometimes smoggy; summers are hot. May, June and September are the best months. The Christmas market on the Rynek opens in late November, the Lajkonik parade is in June and Wianki, the midsummer festival, fills the riverbank.
