Verona, Italy
Opera in a Roman amphitheatre, and a balcony that is a complete fiction
Verona has one of the best-preserved Roman arenas anywhere and stages grand opera in it every summer. It also has Juliet's balcony, which was added in the 1930s to a house that was never hers.
Verona sits in a loop of the Adige on the route from Italy to the Brenner Pass, which is why the Romans fortified it and why it has been strategically fought over ever since. The Arena, built in the first century, held 30,000 people; an earthquake in 1117 destroyed most of its outer ring, which is why the surviving fragment of arcade stands alone. The Scaligeri family ran the city in the fourteenth century and left the Castelvecchio and the extraordinary Gothic tombs by the church of Santa Maria Antica.
The opera festival is the reason to time a visit. Since 1913 the Arena has staged a summer season — June to early September — of large-scale productions designed for the space: Aida, Turandot, Carmen, played to audiences of thousands on the stone steps. The cheap tickets are unreserved places on those steps, you hire a cushion, and the experience of an opera starting as the light goes is worth more than a better seat indoors.
About Juliet: the Casa di Giulietta on Via Cappello is a genuine fourteenth-century house, bought by the city in 1907, to which a balcony was attached in the 1930s from a sarcophagus fragment to satisfy visitors. Shakespeare never came to Verona and the Capulets are literary. The courtyard is nonetheless mobbed, the walls are covered in notes, and the bronze statue has been rubbed bare. Go early or not at all.
Where People Live
Centro storico & Piazza Brà
The Arena, the long curve of Piazza Brà's cafés, and Via Mazzini's shopping leading to Piazza delle Erbe.
Piazza delle Erbe & Sant'Anastasia
The Roman forum's descendant, the Scaligeri tombs, the Torre dei Lamberti to climb, and the Gothic churches north of it.
Castelvecchio & the river
West: the Scaliger castle with Carlo Scarpa's celebrated museum conversion, and the fortified bridge over the Adige.
Veronetta & San Zeno
Across the river east, and west beyond the walls: the university quarter, the Roman theatre, and San Zeno Maggiore — the finest Romanesque church in northern Italy.

Living Here
The opera season
- The Arena di Verona Opera Festival runs from June to early September. Productions are scaled to the space, and the unreserved stone steps are both the cheapest and the most atmospheric seats — take or hire a cushion.
- Performances start late to avoid the heat and can run past midnight. Nothing is covered: a thunderstorm can delay or cancel, and the policy on refunds is worth reading before you book.
- Outside summer the Teatro Filarmonico stages the winter opera and ballet season.
Wine and the lake
- Valpolicella begins immediately north of the city and is where Amarone is made — a dried-grape red of real power. Several estates are a twenty-minute drive and take visitors by appointment.
- Soave is east, Bardolino and Lugana on Lake Garda to the west.
- Lake Garda's southern shore — Peschiera, Lazise, Sirmione — is half an hour by train or road and is the obvious day trip.
Getting about
- The historic centre is compact and walkable, and largely closed to non-resident traffic — check your hotel's arrangements before driving in, because the ZTL cameras fine automatically.
- Verona Porta Nuova is on the main Milan–Venice line: Venice about 70 minutes, Milan 80, Bologna an hour.
- Verona Villafranca airport is fifteen minutes out, and the Dolomites are about two hours north.
Practicalities
- Verona gets genuinely hot in July and August, and the Arena's stone holds the heat well into the night.
- The VeronaCard covers the Arena, the major churches, Castelvecchio and the tower, and pays for itself quickly.
