Bordeaux
The world's wine capital, scrubbed clean and newly likeable
Bordeaux spent the late twentieth century black with soot and traffic. A twenty-year clean-up stripped the limestone back to gold, pedestrianised the centre and laid trams — and the result is one of the most handsome cities in France.
Bordeaux grew rich on the Garonne. Roman Burdigala became an English possession for three centuries through Eleanor of Aquitaine's marriage, which is when the wine trade to England began, and the eighteenth century — when the port handled sugar, slaves and claret — built the city you see: a continuous curve of limestone quays, the Place de la Bourse, and streets of uniform classical housing. UNESCO lists the whole of it as the Port of the Moon, for the crescent the river makes.
The transformation is recent and dramatic. Through the 1990s the façades were soot-blackened and the quays were a motorway; the city sandblasted the stone, put the traffic underground or elsewhere, built a tram network and laid out the Miroir d'Eau opposite the Place de la Bourse — a thin sheet of water that reflects the façade and alternately mists, which is the single most photographed thing in the city and deservedly so.
The wine is both the point and, for a visitor, slightly beside it. La Cité du Vin, an arresting building north of the centre, does a genuinely good job of explaining wine globally rather than just locally. But the châteaux are out of town — Saint-Émilion forty minutes east, the Médoc north along the estuary, Pessac-Léognan on the doorstep — and visiting them needs a car, a driver or an organised tour. Within the city, the wine bars do the work.
Where People Live
Triangle d'Or & Quinconces
The eighteenth-century grand quarter: the Grand Théâtre, the luxury shopping, the Monument aux Girondins and the long Allées de Tourny.
Saint-Pierre & the quays
The oldest streets behind the Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d'Eau, with the narrow lanes, the bistros and the Porte Cailhau.
Chartrons
The old wine-merchant quarter north along the river: the Sunday market, antiques, and the Cité du Vin at its end.
Saint-Michel & Capucins
South of the centre: the basilica, the city's big covered market at Capucins, and the most mixed and least polished quarter.

Tours & experiences
Living Here
Getting about
- The tram network covers the centre and crosses the river; lines A, B, C and D between them reach almost everything a visitor wants.
- The LGV puts Paris two hours away by TGV, which has changed the city's economy and its property prices.
- The centre is flat and walkable end to end; a bicycle is pleasant on the quays.
The vineyards
- Saint-Émilion is about 40 minutes east by road or train and is the easiest classic visit — a medieval hill village surrounded by vines, walkable once you are there.
- The Médoc châteaux along the D2 require a car or a tour, and most of the famous names need an appointment made well in advance.
- Pessac-Léognan and the Graves are closest to the city, and several estates are reachable by tram and a short taxi.
The coast and the dune
- Arcachon is about an hour southwest by train: oyster beds, a belle-époque winter town, and the Dune du Pilat — the largest sand dune in Europe, which you climb for the view over the forest and the Atlantic.
- The Atlantic beaches at Lacanau and Cap Ferret are summer day trips, with serious surf and serious rip currents.
Practicalities
- August empties the city of locals and a surprising number of restaurants close for the month.
- The wine shops will ship, which is worth arranging rather than carrying bottles home.
