The Red City, where the medina still runs on donkeys and dirhams
Marrakesh is Morocco's fourth-largest city and its first for visitors, an imperial capital of red walls at the foot of the High Atlas whose great square, Jemaa el-Fnaa, has been the loudest place in the country for nine centuries. It is a hard-selling, gorgeous, thoroughly commercial city that repays those who slow down.
The Almoravids, a Berber dynasty out of the Sahara, founded Marrakesh around 1070 as their capital, and it gave its name to the country: 'Morocco' is a European corruption of it. The Almohads took it in 1147 and built the Koutoubia mosque, whose minaret is still the tallest thing on the skyline, by law. The Saadians made it the capital again in the 16th century — the Badi palace and the Saadian tombs are theirs — before the Alaouites, who still reign, moved the court north to Fez and Meknes. The French Protectorate arrived in 1912 and built Guéliz, the new town, outside the walls, while the pasha Thami El Glaoui ran the south until independence in 1956. Churchill painted here, the Rolling Stones and Yves Saint Laurent came in the 1960s, and cheap flights made it one of the most visited cities in Africa. The 2023 Atlas earthquake damaged parts of the medina, but the city recovered fast.
The medina, inside roughly 19 kilometres of red pisé wall, is the point and the puzzle: Jemaa el-Fnaa at its centre, the souks fanning north towards the Ben Youssef madrasa, the Kasbah and the royal palace to the south, the Mellah (the old Jewish quarter) to the south-east, and the riad neighbourhoods of Mouassine and Bab Doukkala where most visitors sleep. Guéliz, north-west along Avenue Mohammed V, is the French-built new town of wide boulevards, cafés, the Majorelle garden and the shops. Hivernage, between Guéliz and the walls, is hotels, nightclubs and the Menara gardens. Beyond are the Palmeraie, the palm grove of resort villas to the north-east, and the sprawling working districts — Daoudiate, Sidi Youssef Ben Ali, Massira — where most of the city's roughly one million people actually live. The Atlas, snow-capped for half the year, sits on the southern horizon an hour's drive away.
It is a city of gardens, courtyards and performance. Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk — storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, snake charmers and a hundred food stalls of grilled meat, snails and harira — is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list and is exactly as loud as it sounds. The Majorelle garden and the Yves Saint Laurent museum are the modern pilgrimage; the Bahia palace, the Saadian tombs and the Ben Youssef madrasa are the old one. Food runs from tanjia, the slow-cooked lamb that is the city's own dish, through tagines and Friday couscous, to a serious restaurant scene in the riads and Guéliz; the wine from Meknes is decent. Football means Kawkab Marrakech and a national team whose 2022 World Cup run stopped the country; the marathon in January and the film festival in late autumn are the other fixtures. The hammam, public or hotel, is the city's real rest.
The hard parts are the selling and the heat. Faux guides, the 'that way is closed' trick, henna women who grab your hand, and restaurants and taxis that quote one price and charge another are daily; none of it is dangerous, but it wears on people, and firm politeness is the only tool. Summer runs above 40°C from June to August and the city empties of anyone who can leave; the riads are cool, the streets are not. Petits taxis rarely use the meter, the medina lanes are motorbike racetracks, and the hard sell around the square can be unpleasant for women alone. Morocco is a stable monarchy with real limits on speech about the King, Islam and Western Sahara. What it offers is the most complete medieval city in the Maghreb, a design and craft culture that draws the world, excellent value, the mountains an hour away and the desert a day beyond.
Where People Live
Jemaa el-Fnaa & the Souks
The square and the maze north of it — spice, leather, lanterns, carpets, the dyers' souk and the Ben Youssef madrasa at the far end. Go early for the souks and at sunset for the square.
Mouassine & Bab Doukkala
The quieter north-western medina of restored riads, the Mouassine fountain, Le Jardin Secret and the concept stores; where most visitors sleep and where the design money has settled.
Kasbah & the Mellah
The southern medina: the Saadian tombs, the ruined Badi palace, the Bahia palace, the royal palace's blank walls and the old Jewish quarter's spice market and synagogue.
Guéliz
The French new town along Avenue Mohammed V — cafés, galleries, the Majorelle garden and Yves Saint Laurent museum, the train station and the shops and restaurants where young Marrakshis go out.
Hivernage
The hotel and nightclub district between Guéliz and the walls, with the Menara gardens and their olive groves and the Théâtre Royal at its edge. Where the money spends its evenings.
The Palmeraie
The ancient palm grove north-east of the city, now resort hotels, golf courses and villas behind walls, with camel rides and quad bikes for the tourists among the palms.
Sidi Ghanem
The industrial zone on the Safi road turned design district: workshops and showrooms for ceramics, textiles, furniture and lighting, and where the riad decorators buy.

Getting about
- The medina is walked; a licensed guide for the first morning, booked through your riad or the tourist office, is worth it. Alsa's green city buses connect Jemaa el-Fnaa with Guéliz, the station and the airport (route 19), but most visitors never use them.
- Petits taxis (beige, three passengers) are cheap but rarely run the meter — agree the fare first; a short daytime hop across town is a few tens of dirhams. Grands taxis run fixed routes out of town. Calèches, the horse carriages, are for the ride, not the transport.
- Menara airport (RAK) is about six kilometres south-west, 15 minutes by taxi at a fixed rate posted at the rank, or the L19 bus. ONCF trains from the Guéliz station reach Casablanca in around two and a half hours, connecting to the Al Boraq high-speed line to Rabat and Tangier; Supratours and CTM coaches serve Essaouira and the south.
- A hire car makes sense only for the Atlas, the Ourika valley and the coast; driving in the medina is impossible and the lanes belong to motorbikes and donkey carts.
Health
- Dial 15 for an ambulance, 19 for the police (190 from a mobile) and 177 for the gendarmerie outside town. Ibn Tofail is the public hospital; the Clinique Internationale and the Polyclinique du Sud are the private ones expatriates and travel insurers use.
- Pharmacies (green cross) are everywhere and a rota of pharmacies de garde stays open overnight; stick to bottled water and be selective at the square's food stalls.
- Sun, heat and dehydration are the hazards in the city, and cold, altitude and remote roads in the Atlas; carry travel insurance that covers mountain rescue if you plan to trek.
Work & study
- Cadi Ayyad University, founded in 1978, is among the largest in Morocco with faculties across the city; the Université Privée de Marrakech and a cluster of hospitality and tourism schools feed the hotels.
- Tourism runs the economy — hotels, riads, guides, restaurants and the crafts that fill the souks — with agriculture on the Haouz plain, construction, real estate, and a growing conference business since COP22 in 2016 and the IMF and World Bank meetings in 2023.
- Foreigners need a work contract approved by the labour ministry before a residence card; many run riads or work remotely. French is the language of business, Darija the language of the street, and Amazigh is spoken across the mountains.
Money & manners
- Moroccan dirhams, a closed currency you cannot take out in quantity; ATMs are in Guéliz and around the square, and the medina runs on cash. Cards work in hotels and better restaurants. Tip 10% in restaurants, a few dirhams to porters and attendants, and nothing to anyone who has simply appeared to 'help'.
- Haggling is expected in the souks and is a conversation, not a fight — open at a third to half of the asking price, walk away once, and accept that the last price is the price. Fixed-price artisan shops in Sidi Ghanem and the Ensemble Artisanal are the sanity check.
- Non-Muslims may not enter working mosques; dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and drink alcohol in licensed bars, hotels and restaurants only. Ramadan slows the city by day. March to May and October to November are the seasons; summer is brutal and winter days are mild with cold nights and snow on the Atlas.
