Stockholm is a city of just under a million in a metro of around 2.4 million, spread across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic. It is orderly, expensive and a good deal more inventive than its reserve suggests.
Birger Jarl's letter of 1252 is the first mention of Stockholm, a fortified island town at the point where Lake Mälaren drains into the Baltic, and the site was chosen for exactly that: whoever held it controlled the trade of the whole Mälaren basin. Hanseatic merchants ran the place for two centuries until Gustav Vasa took it in 1523 and made it the capital of an independent Sweden. The seventeenth-century great-power years gave it the palaces, the churches and the Vasa, the warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and is now the city's most-visited museum. Sweden stayed out of both world wars, and Stockholm's twentieth century was the welfare state, the demolition of the old Klara quarter for a modernist centre in the 1960s, the Million Programme suburbs, and the 1986 murder of Olof Palme on Sveavägen, still unsolved to most people's satisfaction. Since the 1990s it has been a tech town: Ericsson, Skype, Spotify, Klarna.
The city is water and bridges: fourteen islands, with about a third of the surface water and another third parkland. Gamla stan, the old town on Stadsholmen, holds the Royal Palace, the cathedral and the narrow lanes the postcards show. North of it Norrmalm is the commercial centre — the central station, Sergels torg, the department stores — and Östermalm to the east is old money, Stureplan's nightlife and the embassies, with the museum island of Djurgården beyond: the Vasa, Skansen, ABBA. Kungsholmen, west, has the City Hall where the Nobel banquet is held and a quieter residential grain; Vasastan, north, is where the middle class lives in turn-of-the-century flats. Södermalm, the big island to the south, was working-class and is now the bohemian and expensive quarter, with cliffs looking back over the water. The tunnelbana carries everyone out to Solna, Sundbyberg and Nacka, and to the Million Programme suburbs — Rinkeby, Tensta, Husby — that are the other Stockholm.
It is a city that exports pop — ABBA, Roxette, Max Martin, Spotify — and design, and it takes both seriously without saying so. The Moderna Museet on Skeppsholmen, Fotografiska on the Södermalm shore and the Nationalmuseum are the big three, the Nobel ceremonies in December are the civic high mass, and Midsummer is when the city empties to the archipelago. The food ranges from husmanskost — meatballs, herring, Thursday pea soup — through a strong Middle Eastern and Asian streak in the suburbs to Frantzén's three stars; fika, the coffee-and-bun pause, is not optional. Alcohol comes from Systembolaget, the state monopoly, and bars are dear. Sport means the three-way football rivalry of AIK, Djurgården and Hammarby, and in winter ice hockey and bandy. The tone is reserved, egalitarian, punctual and lagom — enough, not too much — and it thaws noticeably in June.
The hard parts start with housing: the municipal rental queue runs to years, so newcomers sublet on a grey market at prices that would alarm a Londoner, and buying is dearer still. Eating and drinking out are expensive, and the winter is not so much cold as dark — around six hours of daylight at the solstice, and slush rather than picturesque snow for much of it. Swedes are slow to befriend, and the ease with which they switch to English can leave you never learning the language. Gang shootings in the outer suburbs have become the country's central political argument, the rise of the Sweden Democrats has changed the tone of a famously liberal place, and NATO membership in 2024 changed its posture. What it offers is a capital where you can swim in clean water in the middle of town, take a ferry to thirty thousand islands, ride a transit system that works, and raise children in a country that pays you to.
The medieval island town: the Royal Palace and its changing of the guard, Storkyrkan, Stortorget's painted houses and the Nobel Prize Museum. Tourists by day, oddly quiet by night.
The business and shopping centre north of the old town — the central station, Sergels torg, Drottninggatan, the NK and Åhléns department stores and Kulturhuset. Rebuilt in the 1960s and still argued about.
Money, embassies and Stureplan's clubs, with the Östermalms Saluhall food hall; across the bridge, Djurgården's parkland holds the Vasa, Skansen, ABBA The Museum and the Gröna Lund fairground.
The southern island: Götgatan and SoFo's boutiques and bars, Hornstull's market, Fotografiska and the cliff path at Monteliusvägen. Where creative Stockholm lives, drinks and pays too much rent.
Turn-of-the-century flats, Odenplan, Asplund's city library and Vasaparken — the comfortable middle of the middle class, with the best neighbourhood restaurants.
The City Hall island, with Rålambshovsparken for summer evenings, the Norr Mälarstrand waterfront walk and a quieter residential grain. Families and civil servants.
Separate municipalities that the tunnelbana makes part of the city: Karolinska Institutet, the national arena, Mall of Scandinavia and dense new flats along the tracks.
The former docklands south-east of Södermalm, rebuilt as a showcase eco-district on the water, and beyond it Nacka's forest reserve and the road to the archipelago.
