The grey city on the Pacific that became the food capital of the Americas
Lima is the capital of Peru and home to roughly a third of the country, a desert city of around ten million on cliffs above the Pacific, under a lid of cloud for half the year. It is chaotic, unequal and enormous, and it currently has the most exciting restaurants on the continent.
Francisco Pizarro founded the Ciudad de los Reyes in January 1535 on the Rímac river, in a valley the Ichma and then the Inca had already farmed and built on, and it became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru — the seat of Spanish power for the whole of South America, the richest city on the continent and the port through which Potosí's silver left for Spain. The University of San Marcos, founded in 1551, is the oldest in the Americas. Independence was proclaimed in the Plaza Mayor in 1821; the guano boom of the mid-19th century paid for the boulevards, and the Chilean occupation of 1881–83 in the War of the Pacific was the great humiliation. The 20th century brought the migration from the Andes that turned a city of well under a million in 1940 into one of around ten million, much of it in the self-built districts on the hills, and the violence of the Shining Path years in the 1980s and early 1990s.
The city runs along the coast for some fifty kilometres and back into the desert hills, and the districts matter more than the whole. The Centro Histórico on the Rímac holds the Plaza Mayor, the cathedral, the Government Palace and the colonial balconies, and is a UNESCO site that empties and roughens at night. South along the cliffs are the districts visitors and the well-off live in: Miraflores, with its parks, malls and clifftop malecón; Barranco, the bohemian former resort of old mansions, bars and galleries; and San Isidro, the financial district with its olive grove and embassies. Inland, La Victoria holds the Gamarra textile market, Surquillo the best food market, and Pueblo Libre the museums. The cones — Lima Norte, Sur and Este — are where most Limeños live, in districts like Comas, Villa El Salvador and San Juan de Lurigancho, the most populous in the country. Callao, the port and airport, is a separate province to the west.
Food is the thing. Lima's ceviche, its Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian) and chifa (Chinese-Peruvian) cooking, its anticuchos and its pisco sours were always good; the boom that Gastón Acurio started in the 1990s made them a national project, and the city now has several restaurants routinely named among the best in the world — Central, Maido, Kjolle — alongside cevicherías and huariques that cost a tenth as much and are the real point. Beyond the plate, the city has the Larco museum's pre-Columbian collection, the MALI, the pre-Inca huacas rising oddly among the apartment blocks, surfing off Miraflores and Punta Hermosa, and paragliders off the cliffs. Football is Alianza Lima, Universitario and Sporting Cristal, and the derby between the first two is as fierce as any on the continent. Music runs from the criollo waltz to the cumbia of the cones and salsa in Callao.
The hard parts are real. Lima sits under the garúa, a grey coastal cloud, from roughly May to November, and the sun and blue sky of summer come with real heat; it almost never rains. Traffic is among the worst in the world and the transit patchy; petty theft is common, so visitors should be careful with phones and taxis, and know that the gap between Miraflores and the outer districts is one of the widest in any city. Peru's politics — half a dozen presidents in a handful of years — is a running crisis, and the big earthquake that seismologists expect is the unspoken one. Against that, prices for a capital are low, the coast and the food are extraordinary, the people are warm and the city's energy is undeniable. Miraflores and Barranco are safe, walkable and pleasant to live in, and the rest of the country — Cusco, the Andes, the Amazon — is a flight away.

Centro Histórico
The Plaza Mayor, the cathedral, the Government Palace, the San Francisco monastery and its catacombs, and the wooden colonial balconies of the old viceregal capital; lively by day, empty and best avoided late.
Miraflores
The clifftop malecón, Parque Kennedy and its cats, the Larcomar mall dug into the cliff, the Huaca Pucllana pyramid, and most of the city's hotels, cevicherías and visitors. Safe and pleasant.
Barranco
The old seaside resort south of Miraflores — the Bridge of Sighs, the crumbling mansions, the galleries and the MAC, and the city's best bar and live-music scene. Where the artists and the expats live.
San Isidro
The financial district and the embassies, with the ancient olive grove of El Olivar, the Huaca Huallamarca and the city's most expensive apartments; much of the fine dining is here or nearby.
Surquillo & La Victoria
The Surquillo market where the chefs shop, and La Victoria's Gamarra, the largest textile and clothing market in South America; both busy, both worth a little care.
Pueblo Libre & San Miguel
The Larco museum and the national archaeology museum in Pueblo Libre's quiet colonial streets; San Miguel's Parque de las Leyendas zoo and the coastal avenue out to Callao.
Callao & La Punta
The port, the airport, the Real Felipe fortress, the Monumental Callao art project and La Punta's seaside promenade at the tip; some of the roughest and some of the prettiest streets in the metro.
The cones
Lima Norte, Sur and Este — Comas, Los Olivos, Villa El Salvador, San Juan de Lurigancho — the vast self-built districts where most Limeños live, with their own malls, cumbia and economy, largely unseen by visitors.

Getting about
- The Metropolitano is a bus rapid transit line running north–south along the Paseo de la República expressway through Miraflores and Barranco; Line 1 of the Metro, an elevated railway, serves the east and south, and Line 2 is under construction. Each has its own fare card.
- Most Limeños travel by combi and micro — the informal minibuses — and by the corredor bus routes; visitors mostly use app taxis (Uber, Cabify, inDrive), which are cheap and safer than hailing on the street.
- Jorge Chávez airport in Callao, with its new terminal, is anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours from Miraflores depending on traffic; there is no rail link, so book a taxi at the airport desks or through an app. Flights to Cusco and the regions are frequent.
- Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro are walkable and have a cycle path along the malecón; the rest of the city is not, and the traffic is among the worst anywhere.
Health
- Clínica Anglo Americana, Clínica Ricardo Palma, Clínica Internacional and Clínica San Felipe are the private hospitals visitors and the middle class use; the public system (EsSalud for the insured, the health ministry's hospitals for the rest) is stretched.
- Dial 105 for the police, 116 for the fire service and 106 for the SAMU ambulance. Pharmacies (Inkafarma, Mifarma) are everywhere and sell most things over the counter; do not drink the tap water.
- Visitors should carry travel insurance that covers private clinics. Altitude is not an issue in Lima, at sea level, but it is when flying on to Cusco, so allow a day there. Sunscreen in summer, a jacket in the grey months.
Work & study
- The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (1551) is the oldest university in the Americas; the Pontificia Universidad Católica (PUCP), the Universidad del Pacífico, the Universidad de Lima and Cayetano Heredia (medicine) are the leading private ones.
- The city is Peru's economy: government, banking (BCP, Interbank), the mining companies' head offices, the port and its trade, fishing and fishmeal, textiles in Gamarra, and a large informal sector that employs the majority. Tourism and gastronomy are the growth story.
- Spanish is essential; English is spoken in business, tourism and the better restaurants but not on the street. Foreigners need a work visa through the migration office, and much hiring is by personal connection.
Money & manners
- Peruvian soles; cards are accepted in the better districts and cash everywhere else, with ATMs in every bank and mall. Tip around 10% in restaurants if service is not already added; the 18% IGV sales tax is usually included in prices.
- Limeños are polite, formal on first meeting — a handshake, or a kiss on one cheek — and warm after; lunch is the main meal and long. Do not flash a phone on the street, and agree taxi fares or use an app.
- Summer (December to April) is hot and sunny with the beaches full; the garúa season (May to November) is grey, damp and cool, around 15–18°C, and the city looks its dullest. It almost never rains, and the earthquake drills are taken seriously.
