The city that is its own argument

New York does not need to be explained, only navigated. Eight and a half million people on a few islands, a grid you can read in a minute and a culture you cannot exhaust in a lifetime.

New York (Manhattan), NY
New York (Manhattan), NY — Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons · See source page

It began as a Dutch trading post at the tip of Manhattan in 1624, was taken by the English and renamed in 1664, and grew into the country's largest city by the 1790s on the strength of the best natural harbour on the Atlantic coast. The 1811 grid — numbered streets and avenues laid over the whole island north of the old town — is why you can find anything in Manhattan with two numbers. The 1898 consolidation joined Manhattan to Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, and the five-borough city has been the largest in the United States ever since.

Manhattan is the postcard and the smallest part of the population. Downtown is the old irregular streets of the Financial District, Chinatown and the Village; Midtown the skyscrapers, the theatres and the stations; Uptown the museums along Fifth Avenue, Central Park, and Harlem. But most New Yorkers live across the rivers — Brooklyn alone would be the fourth-largest city in the country — and the interesting arguments about food, music and rent have mostly moved there. A visit that never leaves Manhattan sees the monument, not the city.

The subway is the great equaliser and the reason the place works. Twenty-four hours a day, 472 stations, a flat fare tapped with a card or phone, and it reaches every neighbourhood that matters. It is dirty, loud, occasionally maddening and utterly essential; the city's walking culture — everyone walks, fast — is built on it. Taxis and rideshare exist for the rain; a car is a burden most residents refuse.

The cost is the thing. Rent in the desirable neighbourhoods is the highest in the country, apartments are small, and the city extracts a price from everyone who lives in it. What it gives back is a density of everything — food from every country on earth, the museums, the theatre, the parks, the sheer chance of the street — that no other American city approaches. People stay for the ambition and leave for the space, and the ones who stay would not live anywhere else.

Where People Live

The neighbourhoods

Lower Manhattan

The Financial District, the 9/11 Memorial, the Battery and the ferries — plus Chinatown, Little Italy, SoHo's cast-iron shopping and the Lower East Side's tenement history and bars.

Greenwich Village & Chelsea

The Village's tree-lined old streets, Washington Square, the West Village's brownstones; then Chelsea's galleries, the High Line and the Meatpacking District.

Midtown

The skyscraper core — Times Square, the theatres, Grand Central, the Empire State, Fifth Avenue. Where visitors stay and workers pour in; few people live here.

Upper East & Upper West Side

Either side of Central Park: Museum Mile and old money to the east; Lincoln Center, the Natural History Museum and a more relaxed residential feel to the west.

Harlem

The capital of Black America — the Apollo, the brownstones of Sugar Hill, Sunday gospel, and a restaurant revival along Lenox Avenue.

Brooklyn

Williamsburg's bars and boutiques, Park Slope's brownstones and Prospect Park, DUMBO's waterfront under the bridge, Bushwick's murals, Coney Island's boardwalk — a city of its own.

Queens

The most diverse county in the country — Flushing's Chinatown, Jackson Heights' Indian and Colombian streets, Astoria's Greek and Egyptian cafés. The best eating in New York, honestly priced.

Living Here

Practical notes for residents

Getting about

  • The subway runs 24 hours; tap in with a contactless card or phone (OMNY) and fares cap weekly. Buses cover the crosstown gaps. Learn 'uptown' and 'downtown' and the express-versus-local distinction, and you have the system.
  • Walking is how the city moves — twenty blocks is a mile, and Manhattan's grid makes distance easy to judge. Citi Bike is everywhere and the protected lanes are now real.
  • JFK is 50–75 minutes by AirTrain and subway or LIRR; LaGuardia is closer, by bus or taxi; Newark, in New Jersey, by NJ Transit rail. Penn Station and Grand Central are the rail hubs; Amtrak runs to Boston and Washington in three to four hours.
  • Yellow taxis are hailed on the street; rideshare is the same price or more. A car is a liability — alternate-side parking rules alone defeat most residents.

Health

  • NYU Langone, Mount Sinai, NewYork-Presbyterian (Columbia and Weill Cornell) and the public NYC Health + Hospitals system (Bellevue is the oldest public hospital in the country) make this one of the best-served medical cities anywhere.
  • Dial 911. Pharmacies — Duane Reade, CVS, Walgreens — are on most blocks and many are 24-hour. Urgent-care clinics (CityMD) are the walk-in option for minor problems.
  • Insurance is essential; care is world-class and priced accordingly.

Work & study

  • Columbia and NYU are the great universities; CUNY, the public system, educates more New Yorkers than anyone; Cooper Union, Juilliard, Parsons and Pratt anchor the arts.
  • Finance (Wall Street), media, advertising, fashion, law, tech (the 'Silicon Alley' along the Flatiron and now Hudson Yards), healthcare and the largest tourist industry in the country. It is the biggest urban economy on earth.
  • The city runs on ambition and long hours; the trade-off is a labour market that will hire almost any skill at some price.

Money & manners

  • US dollars; cards everywhere, though cash still helps at the bodega and the dollar-slice. Tip 20% in restaurants, a dollar a drink, and tip the cab. Sales tax is added at the register.
  • New Yorkers are direct, not rude: they are in a hurry, and will help you if you ask plainly. Do not stop in the middle of the sidewalk. Stand right, walk left on escalators.
  • The city never fully closes; a diner or a deli is open somewhere at any hour, and that fact is part of the identity.
